05 : ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
With the sole objective of showing new talents, once a year, Art'Loft organizes a personal exhibition of a "Guest Artist". This year, we are proud to present the work of Riet van de Linden in this "Back to basics exhibition.

Riet van der Linden is a Dutch artist and writer, based in Bourg sur Gironde in France and Shenzhen in China.

Riet van der Linden was educated as an art historian in the Netherlands at the universities of Leiden and Amsterdam. At the beginning of the 1980’s she became involved in the Dutch women’s art movement (Stichting Vrouwen in de Beeldende Kunst) based in Amsterdam. She organised exhibitions, symposia and workshops on feminist issues, whilst initiating exchanges with women art organisations abroad. From 1991-1995 editor in chief of Ruimte (a Dutch feminist art magazine). She was co-founder -president of the International Organization for Women in the Arts (IAWA) and co-founder -president of the Judith Leyster Foundation (An award for senior women artists). During 1995, Riet van der Linden lived in Chicago (USA) and became a visiting professor at the University of Chicago(Illinois). In 1999, in addition to writing about contemporary art she started to write fiction (short stories) and developed as an artist.

Her artistic career accelerated in 2013 when Riet van der Linden moved to Shenzhen (China)where she set up a new studio to create works painted in gouache on cardboard packaging found at random in the street. Her work is not the result of preconceived ideas but rather the logical consequence of the unusual medium, a cardboard box decomposing into its original one-dimensional form. This is how Riet van der Linden's work takes shape, on these unfolded cardboard boxes, no recognizable images, just pictorial elements, a visual play between lines, abstract geometric shapes and color.

The affinity with avant-garde movements such as De Stijl (an artistic movement that originated in the Netherlands as part of its cultural heritage) or Constructivism will come to us naturally.

"My art consists in a residual treatment, in the transformation of the waste collected in my environment, generating a form of visual poetry" — Riet Van Der Linden
